Need Help ASAP.!?!?
I have recently bought a 2001 Audi TT 1.8. It is a manual. Whenever i press the gear selector down and try to go in reverse it goes in 1st gear. Once in like 50 times it will go in reverse. The previous owner told me replacing the clutch will fix it. But I get into 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,and 5th gear no problem with the clutch. I called a local shop they said it can be a Shifting cable. My question is Do i need to replace the clutch to solve the reverse issue. If not what is a cheaper solution to this problem. I drives perfectly just reverse is the issue.

Do you get a clean break from the engine to the transmission when you press in the clutch pedal? No grinding - no movement when stopped - easy to reach the other gears? If so, then it's unlikely to be a clutch issue. Can you locate reverse using the fork controls directly on the transmission? You are likely experiencing wear in the linkage.

Buy the service manual and follow the procedure to adjust the sfit cables/linkage. Also verify the clutch is functioning properly. Bleeding it is a bitch without a high pressure pressure bleeder. My Snap-On model wouldn't cut it until I boosted pressure with regulated shop air.
