Default Help with RS3 Decision

Please no flaming here but I am struggling with my next purchase. I currently drive a '16 SQ5 (lease) and my driving situation has changed (driving a lot more than before) thus reaching my mileage earlier than expected. I truly enjoy the SQ5 and it provides a lot of bang for the money when compared to its competitors. I will be purchasing the next car as opposed to a lease. I love the RS products and will get into one. Issue is that i do like the practicality of the SUV/Hatch option (have dogs, kids etc...) but RS3 is not available here in a tach (if it was there would be no question on what to do). So here are my options:

1- Keep the SQ5 until end of lease (8 months) and then finance the residual thus no change and pray for an RS3 hatch or an RS4 avant here in the states (doubtful on either case but one can dream)
2- Order RS3 and say goodbye to the SUV/Hatch benefits (wife does have an SUV and daughter has a hatch if I need it)
3- Switch brands to its cousin and order/get a 2018 Golf R (can mod as needed) which provides the hatch option and more creature comforts than the RS3 with the capability of modding it for similar performance (still no 5-pot under the hood)

I know most on this board will say get the RS (and I am leaning that way) but want to see what others think either way.

Thanks. J

Will give you some of my thoughts. I had an RS4, B5 S4, and traded my 2015 STi for the RS3. I had never been in an S3/A3 before so wasn't sure what to expect. When I picked up my RS3 I was surprised as to how small it felt. This doesn't bother me but it felt much smaller than any of my other cars. So if size is an issue you may not like that fact. The back is tight. I am 6'2 so not much room behind me. The trunk also isn't huge but folding the seats down does give you extra room. For me the size wasn't a bad thing just wasn't prepared for it. Just my initial thought. If the RS4 Avant comes to the states I would hold out of that car. It might even get me to trade the RS3..

One thing to keep in mind regarding the potential option of getting a Golf R. Not sure if having a sunroof is important, but last I heard it wasn't available. Also, there's a fairly big performance gap between an RS3 and a Golf R. Golf R may actually have a bit more cabin space however but it's still a small car overall. Needless to say a Golf R is a hell of a lot cheaper than an RS3, let alone an S3. Why not consider an S3?

Money is not really the deciding factor (it is A factor) by itself. If S3 was a hatch, Id get that. Im trying to decide if the performance factor of the RS surpasses the lack of SUV/Hatch convenience factor. Therein lies the problem. Had not thought about the sunroof. Never really had a car without one, but then again I am not driving with the sunroof open all the time either.

Ill probably go to COTA (I live in Austin) and do the driver experience thing with Audis and drive the RS3 and see if I am wooed by the performance.

I would at least sit in an A3/S3 and check out the space - I arranged to have a new A3 as my service loaner right before I committed to the RS3 (going from a 2012 A6) to make sure there was enough space for how I use it. Most families don't need more than one SUV, and if you're not hauling a lot of people/stuff on a regular basis, then the RS3 would be great

Why not the S5 Sportback? It's going to be quicker than the SQ5 and will have plenty of room, especially with the 5th door. Like others have said the S3/RS3 is small - like after trading in my 2015 STI I almost regretted getting the S3 because it felt so small (which I've now gotten used to). If you are considering the Golf R then you must be ok with having less than 400 hp, and the S5 Sportback will definitely be quicker than the Golf R and have more room.

You know, the possibility of the RS Q5 being available in North America is much more than the RS3 hatch or RS4 Avant. While Audi was expected to unveil the RS Q5 last September in the Frankfurt Auto Show, it didn't happen and the RS4 Avant showed up instead. I have a feeling that the RS Q5 launch is very, very close.

Here's an article about the RS Q5 from Auto Express UK: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-new...e-fast-suv-bar

If you never had problems with your SQ, check the market value for your car vs the pay off. If you win there, keep it. It is a great car with most of its deprecation done. RS3 (which I bought, dont get me wrong) is on a platform that is reaching the end of its life cycle, we in NA are just considered nerds and got so late. Keep your money locked down, cause new great cars are coming every year from Audi, you won't loose for sure. Good luck.

With dogs, I think an RS3 is not practical, unless your happy with them making a mess in the back seats. If you are wanting a small fun and fast car to drive and screw the the kids and dogs the RS3 is a no brainer. An avant, a fancy name for a good old station wagon from the few manufactures that offer them would really make sense as they handle well are practical and in my opinion look good also. Plus they are true sleeper cars with the right components....great engine, transmission and suspension.
