Brake Pedal warning folllowed by 'Brake" in red underneath

Brake Pedal warning folllowed by 'Brake" in red underneath
Hi
I ALMOST always get BRAKE PEDAL warning after starting car - then the light goes off to be replaced by a red 'Brake" light in the panel below.
Brake pads etc are fine.
Before this started happening and also now I had trouble starting car - hard to find correct place on the brake pedal to get the car to start.
It sounds obvious that the switch under the break might be malfunctioning. Does that seem right? Does to me but mechanic didn't check and found some other issue with the brake pad wiring...
