Good news is that it has been successfully replaced, and waited until 200k miles to suddenly die. Bad news is that I somehow managed to break this cover plate removing the (stripped) middle bolt. I have no idea how that happened. Probably not going to replace this since I barely drive this car anymore, but I'll check to see if I can find one first.
What nobody talks about is that this is a real PITA job if you want it done properly.
There are 3 layers of thin Heat Shields and the hefty splash shield .
1. First layer covers the harness of the 3 connectors beside the "crankshaft position sensor".
2. The 2nd and 3rd layer protects the "crankshaft position sensor"
I am assuming here that the audi engineers decided that it is necessary to have the wire harness and crankshaft position sensor wiring "separated" in this area.
Putting everything back is the PITA as part.
If it is possible to glue/tape everything together, you can attach everything in one shot.
I did it the hard way, installed one layer at a time.
shield 1 - install one bolt at one end.
shield 2 - Install bolt at the opposite end and remove first bolt that holds shield 1
