One of the best things you can do is pay close attention to the additional data VCDS provides you besides just the actual fault code. There's time/date stamps, recurrence counter, relative ranked importance/severity of the code, what control module it appears in, what part #, etc., etc. There's typically a lot more useful diagnostic and helpful details/data capture when the code pops...in the VCDS scan data. Be sure you save your initial scan as a baseline, as you have to 'tell' VCDS (on the scan console screen) if you want to save the scan file; it's not automatic.
Next, copy the fault code and go paste that into a search engine with Audi Q7 in front of it, or use the Ross-Tech Wiki site to lookup your fault codes. If you use the generic browser search it will pull up archival forum threads, videos, etc., so that's generally what I start with, and usually the Ross-Tech result is in the results mix somewhere also, but you may need to scan a few pages of search results. Another great tip: Don't stop looking on the first page of results...that's only the tip of the iceberg normally. I have the Ross-Tech site bookmarked for easy reference. If not familiar with VCDS, you'll benefit greatly from spending a little time with their online tutorial videos to show you what it can do and where to find everything you'll be wanting/needing in future.
Lastly, be sure you go watch video or read about the known issues for the 4L Q7 in general, as well as pay close attention related to the engine in your Q7.
Here's a great place to start:

If you plan on keeping it long-term, service all the drive line lubricants; when you see the Audi service intervals you'll understand why, and don't listen to Audi on the oil change intervals. Read the Q7 owner's manual, and thank me later.
