Default '02 TT Roadster transmission

A buddy of mine just called and said his transmission went out. Car has 68k miles, is stock, and he doesn't beat on it.

Is this a common failure for these?

The shop is saying 5k to rebuild, 8k to replace from Audi.

Anybody know of or have a used tranny for one of these?

Thanks,
Ed

Default Re: '02 TT Roadster transmission - definition

He says he only has 3rd and 4th.

He was parked, went to back out, reverse was difficult to engage, got backed out, couldn't get into 1st, rolled back into space, engaged reverse again (more easily), could only get into 3rd at that point. He said it "felt soft" going into 3rd. On the way home he said it seemed like it was rev'ing like when an auto trans slips. When I asked, he said he didn't notice any other noises. I was thinking if the trans failed internally there should be bad mechanical noises.

Default That's the 1st thing I thought of, but the shop believes that checked out OK

They are not an Audi specific shop though. It's a very good shop that services high end cars in the area such as Mercedes Gullwing and a Jag XJ220 so their initial diagnosis before they get into it may be off. I've had to "teach" them a few things about working on my V8's and my urq. They're competent, just not directly experienced with Audis.

Had this happen to me while driving about 3 years ago. It ended up be a lifter that engages 1/2nd gear. Cudnt shift into 1st or 2nd, added a litlle muscle and it went in and then nothing happened. Untill I got it to the shop, 1st and 2nd were useless, and felt nothing in the shifter when I tried to engage it. Audi replaced the part for me under warranty. they didnt want to, but I think being a former employee with them helped my case.

Default are you talking about a shift fork inside the transmission or part of the shift linkage itself?

Did they replace the part or the whole transmission?

2nd gear fork is weak, that's what did in mine, plus others, jammed it up tight
