I didn't get a single response to my post yesterday, so here it is again:
In a fit of bored curiosity I took off the plastic cover on the engine. (225, BTW, in case that's relevant). Looking down into the engine compartment on the right hand side of the engine I spy a 1 inch diameter circular opening. Through the opening I can see a toothed wheel, maybe 6-8 inches in diameter.
What's this, the flywheel?
To the uninitiated it seems odd to have such a large opening into moving parts of the drive train.

OK Bob...you peaked my curiosity....>>>
If the hole you speak of is below the front right corner of the engine cover, down on the "silver" area to the right of the engine cylinders......
Mine's got a big rubber plug in it. That's the bell housing, and the teeth in there must be the flywheel. Looks like you need a new plug!

It sounds like the rubber plug that goes into the transmission, techs use that hole to line up the
timing marks of the engine. The tech didn't replace it once on my VW, and the gears you are seeing is the transmission gears.

yes. it is most likely the flywheel being viewed through the hole in the tranny.
BTW, I did not see your post
Anyway, this hole should have a cover over it and this opening is there so that timing can be adjusted (at least on cars that you could still do that)

My stupid user question for the day >>>
And I know you'll have the answer...
WTH is a "Bell Housing"? I'm hearing the term more and more, and have yet to figure out what/where it is.
TIA.

Refit the plug..........here's why,
It keeps water out of the flywheel/clutch area.
Years ago, I used a high pressure car wash on an engine in a VW Rabbit, water got in that hole, and the clutch plate stuck to the flywheel so I couldn't move the darned thing off the spot! You could push the pedal all you wanted, but it wouldn't disengage, to allow selection of any gear.
I ended up starting the car in gear and letting it jerk forward to break the clutch plate free. Once that occured everthing was fine.
It may never happen to you but you never know.
