Default 2000 TT w/ Bose audio to mp3?

Hi all!

On Sat I picked up my 2000 Audi TT 180Q. It came with the Bose audio package (175W amp & 6 CD changer). I'd really like to play mp3 CD-RWs and I'm wondering what my options are. Is it just a HU replacement? Would I still be able to keep the CD changer, amp & speakers? Thanks in advance!

Default I just changed my head unit to a pioneer xm, mp3 player......

You lost the in-dash display too, right?

Default Not trying to start anything but, why does one want MP3?

From an audio perspective MP3 is so dynamically and bandwidth limited that it is frankly considered a joke in the audio community. Seriously, the specifications are very similar to cassette.

Maybe the ambient noise levels in the car are high enough that you don't notice it, but on any halfway descent home system the shortcomings are painfully obvious.

Again, not trying to be a smarta$$, just curiious what the facination with MP3 is.

Personnally, I've never been able to tell the difference on any mp3's except for a couple of bad rips.... but then again, I'm tone deaf & color blind :-)

Seriously, I've burned 190 songs onto a disc that I can take to work and listen w/ winamp, then take home and pop in the dvd player. I just like the convience of having a lot of songs at my finger tips and like I said, I don't really notice the lower quality.

Default Tim, was there anything you liked at all on any CD I've ever given you?

If so, they were all low-rez to med-rez MP3's in their life. (128 to 160). Flat? Sometimes. TD has a dymanic range you need hardware to see. Cool? I have some things at 128kbps that rock most things most people have in their homes. In need of improvement? I'm reading new lossless compression techniques. You certainly need to show me something (in house) that will convince me that MP3's are not a good idea in cars. I'll bring the brew and I have the time. Nice to see you back on the forum! And you bit the big one missing the 'highest' tunnel fly-through!

Default Yes, I've always enjoyed the music (even the anime discs), but...

listening to them on either of my home systems (especially the big one)really makes the shortcomings I mentioned apparent. That's why I posed the question.

Sometimes reversing the polarity through the pre-amp in the big system (BAT VK-30SE) seems to bring some life back to things. I've read that some conversion algorhythms reverse absolute polarity, so this makes sense. However, things are certainly truncated at the frequency extreems, there is no air or ambiance around instruments or voices, and the soundstage is pretty much non-existant, especially in front to back depth.

Again, I'm not trying to be a pain in the a$$ about it, and I certainly enjoy the tunes you've turned me on to. Things sound fine in the car, but when I bring them into the house I find them disappointing from a sonic perspective. I'll have an Audi Enthusiasts Audio night sometime soon and you can come listen for yourself.

As far as missing the fly through via the Eisenhauer Tunnel - yeah, I screwed the pooch. You and Sean both keep rubbing that one in. We've got to come up with a very fun route for our August drive to help me get over the tremendous sence of loss!
