Default 2001 Audi TT 225hp: possible purchase but have some Q's

Hey guys, long-time reader, first time poster.

I'm currently looking at finally getting a TT Coupe 225hp. A little info on it:

It's a 2001 (possible early 2001 production if that makes a difference), odo reads 86,000 miles, clean CarFax with routine vehicle service being reported, came from Flemington Audi (NJ), and being exported to Quebec, Canada where I came accross it with its new owner this past May.

Test drove it last night in the ugly, cold rain. Idles great, no misfiring, no loss of power, all electricals are in fine working order, windows roll up/down with ease still need to test things like the cruise control, but overall, a very strong sounding engine and healthy exhaust.

The only odd thing I noticed was that the clutch felt a little tougher to press down on (compared to my VW MK4 Golf 2.0L's clutch) like as if there was extra resistance. It shifted fine with no grinding. Some rattles coming from the rear deck lid, but whatever.

In the cluster though there was a light on - it was GREEN and can be descibed as two opposing headlight looking graphics with 3 radiating lines coming from either side. The cluster is still US-spec, and the owner is still going to pass the Canadian provincial inspection next week.

Any additional advice/recommendations would be appreciated!!

Default I find my 180's clutch a bit stiff >>

If you can when the owner does the bumper mod for Canadian registration have them leave off the bumperettes. It can pass inspection without them.

Default Can I verify with AudiUSA for the timing belt change?

hey DumpTTruck, where in Canada are you from? In Quebec I do frequently see US-imported TT's driving around with the much sleeker US-spec bumpers. Quebec laws are generally not overly strict like ON and BC.

I attempted to call the dealership in NJ where the car was sold to its new Montreal owner, but the service rep refused to give me any additional service history (timing belt/waterpump replacement) using the vehicle's VIN. Would AudiUSA be more helpful to me?

Check the service records, or with whomever did the service

Default timing belt, timing belt, timing belt!

make sure the belt AND tensioner AND water pump have been changed. if not, have them changed before you take the thing home.

enjoy, sounds like a good one! make sure you have money for maintenance. they aren't cheap to maintain. just a heads up...

at that mileage...if it's on stock suspension...it's going to need refreshed. shocks, busings and possibly ball joints and/or tierod ends etc.

Default So, you are a golfer huh?

what kind of scores are you shooting?

I know that this has nothing to do with your post - but I love golf too and I am curious

Also, there is a difference with the early 2001's as I own one of them. I do not have an ESC button, no traction control, which I hear is better - Good luck!

Default And what of that mystery cluster light?

It's a green, highbeam looking icon that remains lit on the upper left-hand corner. Anyone have their user manual handy who could kindly clue me in?
