Default 2001 TT Stereo Fitment Information

Just in case anyone is interested in stereo upgrade information, I just did my 2001 TT 225Q. There is not much information available on-line and a lot of that is wrong. This was a complete redo: new head unit, new amp, new speakers and new wiring. In the front, the original speakers were 6-1/2" woofers with 1-3/4" tweeters. I went with Focal speakers in the front that had 6-1/2" woofers and 1-3/4" tweeters and they fit with no modification. If you check on Crutchfield, they will tell you that it won't fit. In the rears I went with JL Audio 6-1/2" woofers. They did not fit (Crutchfield would tell you that they would). The existing rear 6-1/2" woofers had molded plastic baskets that had built-in spacing and were square. The dimensions were 4-3/4" X 4-3/4" and the magnet for the JL Audio woofers would not fit the existing hole. We had to add a spacer ring and trim the sheet metal to get it to fit. The original rears were woofers only. I put the new amp in the armrest area where the CD changer was. Plenty of room with the CD changer gone.

Just one subjective comment -- I cannot believe how bad the Bose system was! Just about any upgrade of that system is money well spent. The Bose is unbelievably muddy and the dynamic equalization should never have been put in the car, IMO.

Thanks for this. Great info. What head unit did you use? I assume it has modern features like bluetooth connectivity for hands free phone operation, right?

I went with an Alpine CDE-149BT. I wanted one with HD radio. It does have blue tooth integration. I also put a USB port in the compartment under the ashtray. The Alpine unit has a rear USB port that I connected up to the new USB port. I wanted to be able to do voice control navigation as well. While the initial motivation was to update the phone integration, the improvement in the sound just blew me away.
