2nd coil failure in 11 days...beat that!
and of course, being OOW - my dealer treats me like a stepchild...and of course, run my vin and tell me, the recall isn't on your car...this time, i'm replacing the remaining 3 - no waiting for another (and another) to fail on me. i was revving up to put a hurting on a beetle too...
they told me that at 40k(no recall issue)...hmmm...whatever. this is why i had euro tech in santa monica do my timing belt for me instead of them! can't a girl get a break already!

Re: R U the same midn12ght that wanted my...
that was me. i went out of town for some weeks and lost your e/m(and everyone else's) in the process of swapping out phones. if after this monstrosity is done i still have two nickels, i'd still be up for it.

Coil 1 @ 5pm, In limp mode on the way to dealer, coil2 failed @ 7pm.
Managed to drive it to the dealer,, even got it up to 25mph.... They said Coil 3 was bad when they checked it next morning.
Had them replace all 4 since they were already in there.
Dealer was very nice, all under warrenty/recall,, and got a 50$ gift certificate to Barnes & Noble.
Took trip to PA last winter (2002), the coils failed 2 days after I got back....

I have found that the stock spark plug gaps maybe too...
...large for those that run modded...i run a smaller gap and have found that most of the odd misfires go away (VAG Blocks 16, 17).
The only coilpack that failed on my car had issues with plug gap (#1cyl).
The coilpacks overheat when the gap is large enough to misfire. Essentially, there is not enough sustanied delivery of voltage from the coil as required to jump the spark over the gap at the effective cylinder pressure.
The coil overheats in that the energy from the coil is stored for a longer period of time. The problem escalates as the coil becomes degraded until finally it fails outright.
The stock ND plugs are of a good quality but some need a plug one or two steps colder for mods or hot weather/poor gas. NGK, ND and Denso are the brands that seem to work best on the TT.
Another thing...as much as the factory may recommend this plug and that gap...when you run modded you effectively often need to reduce the gap of the plugs as well as choose a colder plug. IK22 Denso Iridium plugs seem to work well with Stage 2 MODs but not so well with Stage 3 MODs. Get a VAG-COM and look at Blocks 16-17 that show misfire counts. Although misfires can also indicate fueling issues most often this will predicate ignition issues cropping up.
I buy 76 gas only....far superior ...based on my experience. Also......provided that you use the smallest shimming washers you can point the gap toward the intake valves...this improves ignition.
