80K Service and Brakes for $3,000 ??? URGENT
Just wanted to see what others are getting charged for brake jobs and for the 80k service.
Details:
brakes: $1,100
- front/rear pads, rotors, line bleeding, etc
80k service: $1,800
- new ribbed belt, water pump, rollers, thermostat
- other service stuff (oil, filters, haldex???)
can any recommend a local place for the brakes? I've seen Jeff's brake changing guide, it's not worth paying an Audi tech $100/h to do this! I'm in Chicago...
thanks!

Brakes...
F. Rotors, $111.30/pair shipped p/n VW064766 @ http://www.mr-auto-parts.com/ (Brembo HC rotors)
R. Rotors, $83.30/pair shipped p/n 8L0615601 @ http://www.autohausaz.com/ (Zimmerman rotors)
Mintex Red box pads, $30-$40 per axle, various sources.
Brake total, approx. $250, you provide the labor. P/N's are correct for a '01 225. If your brakes aren't pulsing when you brake, you can probably just change pads, and then it's just $60.
The savings for a belt/waterpump/thermo change is similar, but it's a much more difficult job.

Plenty of guys willing to help with the brakes for good beer. I'd offer my place up but the house is for sale and realitors are in and out with just 1 hour's notice. Shoot me an email if no one responds, we'll get ya hooked up.

Find a local shop to do the labor with your parts. Or do it yourself.
Frankly, brake shops don't charge enough for labor to justify my time and effort and tools.
I've got quotes of $800ish for timing belt, water pump, tensioners. With labor.
20k service runs about $325 if done by the book with Haldex change.

Nope.
My time is worth more that that. I can do work as fast or faster than a shop. Not only would I have to wait for the work to be done anyway, but I'd also have to spend at least an hour of driving to get there and back. Do you trust that the shop is going to do anything more than just change pads - i.e. clean/lube guide pins, clean calipers especially the pad guides, put antiseize on the bolts, etc.?
Doing it myself takes less time than going to a shop, costs less, and ensures it's done right.
