Default After 4100 miles (longish)

Just back from a 1500 mile road trip. With 4100 miles on the odometer here's my top likes (and a few dislikes) of my TT:

1) There's nothing like it on the road. You're not going to confuse this baby with 80 other models. It's the one and only TT!

2) It attracts people. All types. From the farmer filling gas cans in the back of his pickup to the 20-something chick checking me out in the mirror of her Mustang GT. A woman rolls down her window to tell me what a beautiful car I'm driving. An older gentleman explains he once owned a bath-tub Porsche. A Porsche Cabriolet forms up behind me for 100 miles of I-80. A couple black guys literally freak out over it at a stop light. Two southern Illinois rednecks drive their beatup, rusted out heap literally in a circle around the TT as I watch from a McDonalds window eating my Big Mac. A guy in a utility van motions me to lower the window to ask if I'm from Indiana . . . he grew up in South Bend.

3) The classic lines. This design is timeless. It'll be as fresh 10 years from now as it is today. I may have this car forever.

4) Handling. Crosswind gusts? They're pushing around the 18 wheelers and I'm not feeling a thing.

5) At 80 the TT is just beginning to feel its gait. This car likes speed.

6) Quality of materials. I stop to see an old friend in Columbia, Missouri, and we pop over to a dance performance in her mid-size Mercedes. There's nothing better about it, and it's a whole lot less fun.

7) The guages at night. So clear and simple. Perfect.

8) The red glow of the console lights. Way cool!

9) TT-embossed door sills and radio cover. Even inside you won't mistake this car for another.

10) The rear end. The flare of the fenders over the rear wheels. The roundness.

11) A short turning radius. Something I loved about my MR2.

12) Real cargo space. The Les Paul, luggage and brief-case all fit. Without folding down the back seat.

13) "Audi" isn't found anywhere on it. Keep'em guessing.

14) Air bag warning stickers were easily removed.

15) Gotta love the lights. Front, rear, interior, the whole package. The rear turn signals.

16) Windshield washer "mist" really works.

17) Speed control keeps speed exactly where you set it.

18) Can't tell when A/C compressor comes on.

19) Climate control can be set to just give you simple fresh, unheated, un-ACed air.

20) Air vents work as well as they look!

But a few things could be improved:

1) The brakes. Very touchy and then response disproportionate to pressure applied. Isn't there a fix for this? And the brake dust.

2) Engine just doesn't rev. It's not eager. Maybe it'll loosen up in another 10K miles. Or maybe it'll take a chip.

3) The stereo is a disgrace. Took along classical music and violins . . . don't sound like violins. Piano sounds even worse.

4) Somebody sell me better padding for the center console brace. My right leg is aching.

5) Dealership. OK, so I didn't buy a Jag at twice the price. I'm still your customer.

6) Attacts bugs. Gotta scrape the bugs off the windshield every 150 miles. The whole front end looks like Jonestown for beetles. Better get a bra, even if I hate'em.

Verdict: despite a few shortcomings, it's still the best car I've ever owned. This one's a keeper!

Default Stupendous! (But, "egnine just doesn't rev?")...

I have to be extra careful to keep mine out of the red-zone in 1 - 3. I guess your first car is a motorcycle....

Great post!

Default Re: After 4100 miles - Excellent Post! A question please...

Thanks for a wonderful post. Could have written it myself as our likes and dislikes are mirror images. A question about 19...what settings did
/do you use for just fresh air?

Again, thanks for the great post.

Default Re: After 4100 miles (longish)

Great post! The TT is an awesome car.

As for the "engine just doesn't rev" part, I think I agree. The car DOES rev and pull the car eagerly all the way to redline. But maybe that's not what you were talking about...

When I try to rev-match while downshifting, I blip the throttle to get the rpm where I want it. In my ford probe, the revs shoot up instantly. In the TT I recently drove, I had to keep on the gas for maybe half a second or so before anything happened. I'm sure this isn't the engine, but rather the engine-management computer system. It's not that the engine won't rev, it's just a "delayed reaction". Is this what you are talking about?

BTW, I think this "delay" might actually be a feature rather than a bug. When I "blip" the throttle in my probe to match revs then engage the clutch, I have to get back on the gas right away to minimize driveline shock or tug. In the TT, I bet you learn to "press and hold" the gas, so when you re-engage the clutch, you're already on the gas and everything goes more smoothly.
