Default Am I being ripped off?

Just a quick question. I have just had my TT 225 gearbox repaired, apparently 2 selector forks for 1st and 2nd gears had broken. The car is out of warranty and I have been told this will be over 1700GBP. Labour charges alone are 120GBP per hour. This seems pretty extortionate to me. Any comments? If anyone has similar experiences of UK dealers I would be interested.

Default That's a chunk in GBP (waht's today's exchange). The labor rate seems....

exhorbitant. Even in America, high-end dealers are geting around US$115 for labor.

I think it would equate to well over 200 dollars/hour

Default The problem is the bloody brits......

They think in dollars but charge in pounds.
The numbers quoted are reasonable IF they were in dollars, but they are in pounds which makes it a factor of two more expensive than it should be.
$120/hr labor is high but reasonable; 120GBP/hr is utterly ridiculous.
This thinking carries to all of their daily activities. For example, a taxi (van) ride from the port of Southampton to Gatwick airport (2 hrs) cost me 245GBP ($500). For that amount I could have rented the damn van for a week.
