Ed:
I just bought a second Motorola, a model "T 7200". It just arrived today & I'm charging it. The first is a "T 6250". It works fine. Try Motorola's web site for specs.

Default Pretty much all brands and models seem to be the same quality...

...It's all in what features you want. At the very least, you should get radios that have the standard 14 channels and 38 subchannels or codes if you want to use them with other people. The cheapy models will not have subchannels, so you'll be out of luck if you don't have that option while other people do.

Beyond that, there's models with weather radios, channel scanning (so you can pick up on other conversations when you're bored), voice activation so you don't have to push the button when you want to talk, and GMRS. GMRS supposedly requires an FCC license since the power level is higher, but you get 5 miles of range instead of the standard 2 miles when you talk on a GMRS frequency. Just pick the model that has what you want in a package that you like, and you should be happy.

Default I just bought Motorolas at Costco for $50... cheapest I've seen them.

Plus, that particular one came with rechargeable batteries, a desktop charger, etc. I think that model goes for about $80 at Circuit City.
Note: I tried one that had the Talk button on the front, I didn't like it at all... that was the only thing I wanted, the Talk button on the side. Other than that, I think they're pretty much all the same.

If Midwest folks want the same ones but don't have a Costco nearby / their Costco doesn't have them / etc, I can go buy a couple more sets if you want...

Default Yeah: Don't get one. They strike me as unacceptable step backwards in terms of technology, in

this era of digital everything!

I've used the T7200 on motorcycle trips and it works well.
