Default Any wine geeks here? Question about corkscrews...

I asked this over at AWOT and no one seems to care. Hopefully I can get some meaningful response here. I just learned about the Laguiole corkscrews yesterday and I have to get myself one of those. My regular two-stage corkscrew works fine, but it's nice to have a really nice one laying around the house for those special occasion. Since there are so many different styles, please help me choose.

My favourites are Château Laguiole Grand Cru with Juniper handle and the one signed by Olivier Poussier with the Yew tree handle. Which one would you choose?

link

Default Wow. Those are some VERY premium corkscrews!! =o

If the signature will matter to you, spend the extra money. I mean, we're already talking over $160 for a corkscrew... the extra isn't all that significant, right?

And this, 'After the terrible storm of december 1999 which destroyed the rare trees of the Château de Versailles garden, we have created the Château Laguiole corkscrew signed by Olivier POUSSIER. Symbol of Peace, Wisdom and Eternity, this corkscrew is served to you by the best sommelier of the world,' how can you be happy with any other one, right?

You'll have a much more interesting story with this one.

HTH!

Default Meh. I hate corkscrews. Use the "Ah So" or if your bottles have cheap glass, use the rabbit ears.

The Ah So can chip older/European glass, so I prefer the rabbit ear. I have a Mikasa version I got at an outlet store on sale. Attractive, effective.

Obviously you can find nicer versions.

Default Ouch. That can't have been good.

"For example, one winery used the ELECTROPULLâ,,¢ uncorking unit to open 12,000 bottles in less than four work days without any problems."

Default For some reason I never attempted to use rabbit ears.

My wine course instructor said he would never allow his staff in an F&B environment to use that. There is potential risk having the staff replace the content inside wine bottle with something inferior since one can open the bottle with rabbit ears without damaging the cork.

Maybe I should play that trick at the next family dinner when my dad opens up a bottle Chateau d'Yquem and I will replace it some something else and see if that raises his eyebrows. "Hey dad, I think your bottle is corked." :-P

Default Tell you the truth, I don't really care about the signature. I just like the way it looks. :-)

Of all the sommelier corkscrews from Laguile, the only sommelier I know is Tanask. Having seen an Iron Chef episode with him facing Kobe, the Tasaki model is a more meaning piece than the sommelier models. Tanaski is not trained professionally as a chef but still kick Kobe's ***. I have seen other M. Tasaki corkscrew on the Internet and they have a more intense red shade on the wooden part of the handle.

Red and white to represent the colours of the Japanese national flag of course which I thought kind of neat. The theme of the national flag carries over to the leather pouch. It looks sharp and trendy in that colour scheme. Unfortunately, I don't really like the way how they split up the colours in the handle.
