Default 'Anyone hardwire their Escort Solo radar? The cig. lighter power cord feeds it 3 volts rather than

12 volts via a converter. The detector works better when plugged into the cigarette lighter, hence the desire to hardwire.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Default I'll need to drop the voltage down to 3 volts or I'll fry the unit. I was planning to go to the

fuse box, but I'll need to convert the power somehow. Are V1s or other radars 12-volt as I suspect they are?

Default Yep, here it is . . .

I'm not sure I'll want to blow it apart to do the install. I also think it'd be a difficult job, since the voltage converter is integrated in the lighter adapter plug housing. Ideas?

http://www.escortradar.com/solocord.htm

Default That would fit into the fuse box...

you are the electronics guru, so I feel silly giving you advice, but Radio Shack must have a similar converter.

Why not buy one of those and use it as your test unit?

Default John, if it were me...

I'd probably order a duplicate cord and disassemble one for parts... its probably a fairly simple circuit. It might even be possible to leave the guts mounted in the plug and wire into it. I'd be happy to help you do this some weekend, if you'd like... drop me an email.

Default Oh no, I'll have to put together a whole "TT Radar Detector" site now! :-) I was just . . .

wondering if anyone has done it to learn from their successes/mistakes.

"Electronics guru"--you're too kind!

Default Radio shack has a bunch of voltage selectable converters....>>

for not much money...Perform some surgery and hardwire.
