Man oh man, why did you have to open it up?I wouldn't touch anything on that car with a 10 foot pole
untill I resorted every other option, including a full refund for the car. As Steve said, opening it up may have caused even more damage and completely ruins your chances of proving anything. 58K on a 2000 car is a little low (allthough some prob. have half of that). What really bothers me is that its right under 60K. Shady dealers LOVE thouse mileages. They will turn the mileage back to just under 60 because thats the "magic" number that descreases the price. That put together with gauge problems is the first sign of the car mileage being tampered with. It doesn't prove anything, but I would yell and scream. I'd try bluffing....go to the dealer and claim that you took it to Audi dealer and Audi said that they will not touch the car because they believe that the mileage has been tampered with. Tell him they found this out when they where diagnosing the gauge problem. Tell him you want the purchase refunded or you'll go to authorities. See what he says.

Sure... Tell me all this AFTER I tore thru it.... ; )
Im thinking at this point, my best plan may be to take it to an Audi dealer, tell them I have some gauge problems that showed up only after the dealer I got it from "fixed" it for me, and let them discover all the stuff I did. I've got some local calls to make, see if anybody can help me out with this.

regarding the temp gauge spiking and settling, some here have switched to an OEM thermostat
and got a stable temp reading from that. also, see if you have a green temp sensor instead of a black one. $6 part.

Thanks, I'll do that
But I can't always afford (financially, or time-wise) to wait for alot of input. I did my searching, then went to work with what I thought was a popular forum-wide advise, actually this time, coupled with what I asked the other day. Everyone says clusters go bad, replace it. But w/o any warranty, and a fairly limited budget, I can't always do the best fix. Sometimes its just what I can manage on my own.
Yeah, I got into the cluster, but I found a coverup from the dealer. If he infact tried to hide a problem, even if I don't have a warranty, I can always threaten a letter to the district attorney/ better business bureau. If it was his fault in the least, he'll probably do everything he can to cover his ***.
I do thank you for all the advise and help you do give. AW has helped me thru ALOT of stuff with my 4000S and A4 in the past.

Interestingly I just came across this info on the A6 board
Who wants to try it on a TT cluster? <ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/Non-Immo-cluster-swapping.html">http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/Non-Immo-cluster-swapping.html</a</li></ul>
