Audi TT 180FWD versus VW Corrado VR6...
Just had a little race with a VW Corrado VR6. Not at a red light, but we both left the highway at the same exit. I noticed he wanted to test the TT, so after we turned (sharp turn) on to the main road (two lanes) I was in second gear and hit the accelerator.
He was about two cars lenght behind me. To my supprise I could not pull away (and probably to his supprise he couldn't gain on me). At 160km/h (when shifting into 4th gear)I decided it was time to stop (girlfriend was in the car getting nervous). Now he could finally overtake me.
I looks like these cars (TT 180FWD and Corrado VR6) are identical in performance. Does anybody have some info about this car (do not remember it being for sale at VW)?! Is VW planning a new model of the Corrado maybe...

Corrado should outhandle and outperform a 180TT FWD, my buddy
had one any even before he tuned it, it was pretty competetive right out of the box... For a FWD car it handles pretty well once you ditch the stock Goodyear GA's.

Found this:

Looks like these are the European specs but it may give you an idea of what you raced....looks like the VR6'ers like to mod their cars even more that us TT'ers! I couldn't find ANY stock US info.

My previous car was a Corrado VR6
It felt a bit quicker than a 180FWD TT I test drove. The VR6 engine pulls all the way through the revs whereas the 1.8T seems to start to tail off in the upper rev band.
Euro Corrados had more power (192HP) and could probably easily take a 180TT.

VR6 Corrado - 178 HP, same exact gear ratios as 180 HP FWD TT. Comparing...
...stock cars to each other, they should pull just about identically through the gearbox. Get it into the twisties, and I'd take the 1.8T for it's weight distribution advantage over the nose-heavy VR6 any day. (This from somebody who's e-mail address is the the German words for what the "VR" in "VR6" stands for.....)

I don't think it would be easy, the Corrado weighs more, and although it is not way heavier it is
..enough to make things pretty equal. Of course a chip will through the whole thing to the TT and the VR6 can't be upped so easy. I for my part will take the TT on a handling course (that's me) but am well aware of Corrado Auto X numbers.

similar experience
Not sure if he pulled back - we both decided to slow down at getting up to 100mph, he seemed to a bit before me, seemed like I was pulling a bit more than him in that range.
(Doesnt make sense if the numbers and comments above are as they are - I have a bit more weight with the quattro and am a non chipped 180.).
They were sightseeing at 50mph doing a video camera of the mountains (this in a area where most everyone is doing 60-70) - so after a couple of minutes of watching them video and following behind, I decided to start to pass on the right , as soon as he saw I was passing he stomped on it, so I thought ok and stomped on it too, my wife got a bit nervous and asked me exactly what did I think I was doing.

Euro spec Corrado VR6 = 190hp
When I was in UK I had a Corrado Storm (limited 500 run) of the VR6. It was a nice motor which had lots of torque and pulled well. It was no quattro but it was a quick car for it's size.
