Know what? Tip probably shifts a whole hell of a lot faster than I do AND you don't have to let off the throttle even a bit. Only reason its slower is (1) you cannot dump the clutch at higher revs and (2) a slight increase in weight (like 200 lbs I think for tips).
You want to AutoX, keep the stick. I've seen posts on the S4 board that in track events OTHER than autox the tips are freaky-good, since you don't have to move your hands from the wheel at all.
Your mileage may vary.

Anyways, just because a car doesn't have a clutch doesn't mean it can't be fun. With tiptronic, you can still control what gear you're in, downshift in the turns, use the engine for braking, etc, but then when you just want to cruise around town and drink a Dr Pepper while doing so, you just stick it in drive and go. I did the A4 test drive earlier this year, and got to mess with the tiptronic shifting, and I loved it. Lots of fun when you wanted it, but if I didn't feel like shifting, I didn't have to.
Now, I've heard from one of the guys I know at The Tire Rack that at some point, they had an A4 with the 5-spd manual another with 5-spd tiptonic. They said the tiptronic was consistently faster because the driver never had to pull his foot off the gas and lose that split second of acceleration while shifting. That sounded pretty dandy to me.
And finally, I don't see how it could hurt anything for it to be an option. Nobody is going to MAKE you get your TT with an automatic. I'd be pretty sure that the automatic will never replace the manual, and will only be offered as an option.
Of course, now I won't be surprised if everything I ever say on this forum will be discredited because "he's the guy that wants an automatic TT!" Heh.<p>Black/black 225QC ordered 5/9/2000
