Been waiting for this...yet another Bipes Electrical Mod- Aux In to the OEM Head Unit
I have an auxiliary input solution to the OEM head unit and amp, if you do not have the upgraded audio system, that includes the CD Changer.
It uses this.
<img src="http://mk1tt.montebellopark.com/images/adapter.jpg">
A Blitz-safe built adapter from Autotoys.
It plugs into the changer cable. It should work for all Audis with the 13-
pin Male DIN cable.
See the write-up and rather "unique" install features below.
This adapter allows you to use any MP3, Ipod, Portable Audio, CD player, RioCar, etc., as an input source to the head unit.
Also, as you read my install, my way allows for full fader and balance control to the base OEM system, with a few mods to help it along.<ul><li><a href="http://people.mn.mediaone.net/jbipes/newttr/auxin.html">Aux In to the OEM Non-Upgraded TT Audio Sysytem</a></li></ul>

Jeff, RIO Car question:
Could this be used on a system with the upgraded stereo and CD changer IF using the changer wasn't an issue.
Thinking bank to my, and several others', RIO Car installs I am still pondering how to install mine and my two issues are:
1. Hookup - Do I replace the Bose unit? Do I add this on to it? If I add it on, how and do I keep the CD changer functionality? If I don't, I have to get a pro to install an amp and run that to the unit.
2. Related to #1 - If I add the Rio to the existing unit, where do I put it (since it is in a DIN style enclosure) and how will that "transform" the look of my enterior.
I, for one, won't be listening to any CD's after the RIO is installed so I won't need the CD changer anymore, meaning I don't need the "pass through" that you madeup to switch between "aux" inputs. However, my question then becomes placemen of the Rio Car (while keeping the Bose installed).
Thanks!

Has there been any news about the Bose CD Changer Aux switch?
I have been away and was just wondering if I missed anything. I have two people that want one here ;-)
What are your thoughts?

I have found that this unit is difficult and costly to produce...
I have made a prototype, and I will now be testing this with this new set-up I have.
My devices should allow an input to the head unit, now that I have "tricked" the head unit into thinking there is a CD changer present.
The problem comes with getting the parts and building this unit. The parts are costly.
I would have to commit to purchasing parts for 30 units, in order to get a price-break.
This means I have to spend over $300 withj no real garrantee of return.
The time to build the enclosure, hand-wire each unit, and test it, is nearly 3 hours.
The cost then to you may be prohibitive. I have to re-think this.
Check this prototype link.

Yes, you could use this device, if you remove the CD changer.
This device "tricks" the head unit into thinking there is a CD changer present.
The output of the RioCar has 4 line-level outs, You could use the "fronts" output to the input into the Aux in adapter. This way, you keep the OEM head unit.
OR
You rip out the OEM head unit, and install the RioCar into the DIN chassis area, and wire the line outputs (all 4) of the RioCar into the OEM powewr amp connections.
If you don't want to use the CD changer, and you don't care for the OEM head unit, this is what I would do.

Nope, if you have the Bose Amp with the CD Changer...
you can connect to the power amp via the connector from the head unit.
See this oft-published diagram as reference.
<img src="http://people.mn.mediaone.net/ttbipes/jpgs/headunitwiring.jpg">
You can wire in RCA plugs to the RF RR, LF RR wires on the connector.
Then you can plug these cables into the outputs of the Head Unit, RioCar, etc.
You can even tap into the power connector, to power the new head unit, and power amp turn-on, etc.

Sweet!! Thanks for all the explainations!
I think that is the route I am gonna go for. Seems the most logical and simple at the same time. Rio should be here this week and I am going to service tomorrow, so maybe they will "remove" the bose unit for me and leave it out far enough so that I can remove it totally when the time comes.
Thanks!
Thanks!

That's what I would do also...
Yea, have them pull the radio, just so that it realeases the clips. You still have nearly 1/2" of play. It will remain secured.
Once you get your radio out, you can pull the wiring harness out like this.
<img src="http://people.mn.mediaone.net/jbipes/jpgs/tt_wiring_harness.jpg">
It's not a lot of room out front, but you can splice into the harness. It's the black connector theree in the middle, that you need to splice into for the line-inputs to the power amp. There is enuf room way in the back, and under the DIN hole area to store the cables. Reach you hand in and down to discover this.
Good luck, it's actually easy, just time consuming.
