Boy, did mance get an big ol' slab of humble pie today.
Right off the top I was TROUNCED soundly. Not just by one or two, but by EVERYONE in SM class. And the most embarrassing part is I DNF'd all three of my runs. Not that it woulda mattered. The class consisted of 3 5.0 litre Cobras, one Stage 3 MTM A4. A 350 cu.in., 350 HP Datsun 240/260Z and a couple other cars equally prepared and all lowered with adjustable suspension and every last damn one of them on race tires cept me. I shoulda known since SCCA's headquarters is here it would be unlike most anywhere else in the country. This is a HUGE event. There were 171 drivers today.
And Mr Cocky left his ECUs with the good stuff in them at home. I ran stock... without a snowballs chance in hell. I was slaughtered! They held a school for me today. Fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice, shame on me. This wont happen again! Next time I bring out all the big guns... intercooler, brakes, ECU, K04 and slicks. Losing doesnt bother me that much... being embarrased does. I was humbled today, plain & simple. Thought my "stuff" smelled like strawberry pop and I paid the price.
Apparently there is no "gimme" class in SoloII here. I was WAY outta my league in Denver today. And Larry... you ready for this? The average lap times in SM were over 6 seconds faster than CSP. I was out-gunned, out-classed and frankly, out-driven. The buck stops here. This was purely MY fault. I underestimated the enemy.
As to why I DNF'd three times then passed on my 4th run is simple. I knew where I did it each time but for the life of me could not see or find the entrance to one slalom. All three were in exactly the same place and much as I'd like to think it was a vague and ambiguous course layout the truth is most made it through there with no problem at all. Some, like me blew it there... some like me 2 or 3 or even 4 times. But the fact is most people (90%+) made it through there with nary a hitch. I just happened to get lost there THREE FRIGGIN TIMES!!
Have I mentioned how many cells I killed in college?
Ok, smoked salmon, Philly cream cheese on a Pepperidge Farm cracker quartet with memosa's on the patio now. Lick my wounds and conjugate a plan for world dominance. The champagne will help. Wish I could lick my freshly whooped butt wounds. Course if I could do that I'd have probably stayed home today anyway.

My condolences...but remember, this was the first outing...and revenge is, as they say, sweet!

Well....CSP beat SM in the SF Region today...and we had about 230-240 cars
Yeah...I know exactly what you went thru....when Corey, Sharon, and I went from GStock to CSP-Rookie...we got beat handsomely...then we went to CSP...and got trounced...it has only been after a reallocation of the E36 M3 and this annoying Toyota in our region that we have been able to be successful in CSP. You have to have:
1) R compound tires
2) Every suspension mod available
3) Driving skills galore
4) Practice..practice...practice
5) Correct tire pressures...I would suggest 42 front/40 rear in your car
I think I was able to get third in CSP again...maybe fourth if this Integra happened to be in CSP...(couldn't find out). Corey managed a first in CSP again. I think we had about 13-15 entrants in CSP again today.
Oh well...there is always next weekend. :-)<p><a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=3821"><br><br>

Let me know when I should fly out for an event . . .
I would be more than happy to co-drive your TT!
Seriously, it takes LOTS of practice to get the hang of auto-x'ing. I auto-x'ed for about a solid 8 years, then took 5 off. I was VERY rusty at my one event this year, but still did pretty well.
Their was not a big turn-out for SM . . .NO cars! I was told I had to run in EM . . .Yes, E Modified! I ran against an Eclipse with 400+ hp. I trounced him by 2 seconds +/-. I would LOVE to drive against more cars, especially better competetion. That is the ONLY way you ever get good.
Mance, keep something in mind if you plan on running SM again. You CAN'T get race tires! They require street rubber . . .and that precludes you from running any of the R compound tires like Kumho, BFG, Yokos, Hoosier or any of the others. You most certainly are NOT allowed to run slicks! I thought the same thing. I was planning on running 17x10 wheels with slicks if they were going to insist on me running E Mod. Once I got word form Howard Duncan himself that I can run SM, I gave up on the notion of getting monster wheels and slicks!
What sort of tires were the other drivers using in SM? If they are using the R compound then get that type of tire, just make sure you are 100% sure they are running them. Not worth buying tires only to learn you can't run them.
Good luck at your next auto-x.<p><a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=3285"><img SRC="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/ttsig.jpg" BORDER=0 alt="Click for Mods"></a>
