Buying a used '00 TT
#2
Well there are a lot of FWD 00s out there, I own one and they are great cars but many O2Js (trans)
have an issue with 1st to 2nd grinding. This is made worse if the former owner forced his or her shifts as the syncros can be damaged. I would watch for this. Also the 1.8T needs (IMSO - in my Strong opinion) a timing belt change @ 60,000 miles and I would want to know if this has been done. At this mileage a clutch may also be needed. These are service items I have changed and it is not all that hard if you know how but most don't,so consider the cost...many other issues IMO are not that big of a deal and are easy to fix. I have a friend who will remain nameless who never drove a 1.8t that was running correctly and did not know his turbo waste gate was stuck open thus making no boost and no power. Therefore I would recommend driving a couple of cars to make sure you know what a good one runs like. Mass airflow sensors have a tendency to fail as an example and when they do you will only make a fraction of the motors potential peak power. Over all Audis are very strong over -engineered cars that are very durable although not without quirks.

Other problems I've heard about
the ones that i have been looking at are all previous leases that just ended, so their mileage is only around 32k, but im definitely gonna take ur advice on driving a few to feel any differences. also ive read that some of the '00s out there have had problems with the windows opening and closing when you open and close your door, and the instrument cluster display shutting off... any remarks on those? maybe thats something that will be under warranty, and hopefully i can purchase an extended one after i get it.

The cluster issue is there but Audi has replaced them and even on cars off warrenty, the windows are
..also not a big deal that's all I'll say . BTW I have had my cluster act up a few times and pulled fuse 11 and 15 and it was fine. I have had a stable cluster for over two years no ant it is the origional. JIM

Buy an Audi Assured car...two more years and plenty of miles to fix bugs...(more)
I have one of the earliest TT's made and my electrical system, i.e. windows and cluster have been fine for the life of the car to date...my tranny does (or did, I am not sure yet) have the problem of occasionally grinding the gears on the 1 to 2 shift if I am driving agressively (shift and let out clutch real quick, rather than hesitiate slightly letting rpms drop further) but having always had a car with a manual tranny it ain't me...the dealer has adjusted the linkages and replaced the fluid and seems to be better...these cars always feel notchy anyway so it is going to be hard for you to tell if one may have a problem. The car is worth it though so get an Audi Assured car so you have that extended warranty.

But you can also take a warranty out on a used car. I got a great deal......
Purchased a 2000 Denim Blue TT with 14.5K on the clock for $21K from a VW dealer (back last December)
Paid an extra $1500 for a good warranty to cover it up to Jan 2005.
I'm happy with the 'insurance' against any failures.
So far the only issue I have had is the 'wacky windows'
