Cable vs. DSS... renting questions also
Currently I am a cable subscriber. I like the service, picture is decent in the Digital/HD area, but anything under channel 100 is analog sent over a digital feed (quality is poor).
I have always considered DSS, used to have it at home. So I have experienced both for several years each. Problem is that I currently rent in a high-rise in downtown Milwaukee. What is worse is that I have an apartment facing north. This means I can not hang a dish out the window. I could always ask the building to install a dish, but more then likely they will decline. Any one know my rights as a renter on this topic? Anyone know any other solutions?
I think my cable bill per month is right around $90.00, plus I have 2 cable modems (which would stay either way I go). When comparing to DirecTV I would be saving close to $30 a month. In addition all the channels would digital to begin with; I would get HDNet, and the option for NFT Sunday Ticket.
Don't get me wrong I like my cable, nothing to buy, rent all my boxes, etc. Any other thoughts on the topic?

why 2 cable modems? Run a router/switch . . .
talk to a neighbor about hanging a dish out their window. Offer to split the service with them, or pay for the entire service and offer them a free connection. The equipment is free, you can also get a signal splitter that allows you to view on mupltiple tv's, but I don't see that being an issue with you being just a punk *** kid living alone. lol
Seriously talk to a neighbor where you could easily run the cable from the dish out their window and through the building to your apartment and make certain to get a dual LNB, one for each apartment.
Just an idea.

Then are you paying extra for a static IP?
Unfortunatly static IP's are not offered here . . . but I might have access to a few static IP's with a server where I am working. If I have it, I won't do it until later in the year. I would just build my own Win2k Server box and bring it to work to host.
No comment(s) on the rest of my post? lol

Static IP's are extra here, it more about bandwith usage
In terms of the rest of the post I do not think my building will allow anyone to just hang a dish out without permission. I think they would rather install it on the roof- and even that might be a battle and 1/2. I would have to make sure we got the HD version of the dish, otherwise I will stick with cable for sure. Plus I get the HD receiver for free.

ok . . . .
what sort of building are you in? Is it just a plain old apartment building? Condo, co-op, do you own, rent, sublet. Is their a board of some sort.
Just ask, take a walk to the roof and see what is already up there. You won't know until you ask!

I rent...

There is my building pictured. The roof is not accessibly by tenants from my understanding. It is not a flat roof also. The only board is that of the renting company- Oakbrook I believe they are called. Basically it is a large corporation that owns several if not dozens of properties. The other problem is that I am on a lower floor and if the unit was mounted on the roof I would more then likely have to install a repeater.
