Default can I use a wider tire on the the stock 17" rims say

255/40/17 , instead of 225/45/17 ? I was told that would not change the spedometer . but it might rub on the 255 it changes from 8.8 & 2.5 inches to 10.2 & 25.2 inches , has anyone tried it or any thing similar?

Default My 225 Dunlop is wider than my 225 Michelin

It has a rim guard. This leads to a slightly wider look.

Default depends on the tire mfg, but i would say 245 is about as wide as you can go

I ran 245/40/17 race rubber last year with no rubbing issues on a 17x8 wheel. If you go wider the problem becomes rubbing the suspension arms, not the fenders. spacers might help, plus if you are just after a look, the spacers really fill out the wheel wells.

S03s and the F1GSD3s are also known to be wider.
