Default Can a marginal 02 sensor drastically effect performance and fuel consumption?

My car seems to be moody lately. One day it will drive excellent, another its cranky. Fuel consumption seems to directly reflect its mood. When car drives well, it eats a lot less fuel. A while ago a code popped up:

17522 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor: B1 S2: Internal Resistance too High

which I reset, only to have it re-appear again few months later. I am wondering if a marginal 02 sensor can cause such drastic change in performance or if there are other things I should be looking at. Anyone has any experience with before/after results of an 02 sensor change? Also, based on the code above, which sensor is it, pre or post cat?

Thanks.

Default I believe I was told the other day that it could as my mpg was suffering...

I did not replace either O2 sensor but put in a different MAF and CLEAN air filter and mpg drastically improved!!! How clean is the filter and how good is the MAF?

Default o2 sensor

i think the o2 sensor before the cat is bank one. Also i have had the same problem with my o2 sensor lately but i have noth had the time to change it yet to see if it will change my proformance. Depending on how it is acting the o2 sensor could be telling the computer the wrong info and this could make the car run alittle richer so u will see that u r getting less miles to the gallon. My o2 sensor goes weird for awhile then will be fine for awhile. im waiting for the code to trip again so i will know what o2 sensor to replace.

Both are pretty good. I've got two MAFs and my TTDA was cleaned about 15K ago.

Default That is the post sensor. Mine started with that error before...>>

it went out. The post is very easy to replace.

Jack the passenger side up. It's past the cats you can get to it without problems.

I've seen up to a 25% drop in fuel economy with O2 sensor problems on other cars.

Default I'm not sure as I replaced the plugs around the same time...>>

However, the CEL never went away and the car didn't run correct. After replacing both, she is purring again.

Average MPG before: 23
Average MPG After: 25
