Run to redline in several gears. Your g/s reading should be at least 144. If your Part Throttle readings are over 10% and your g/s readings are too low then it's the MAF. Don't waste money on the MAF if you don't check these readings. If you're getting a code, the dealer will replace it otherwise you have to pay to get the performace back like I did.
I was getting 146 g/s (very low on a 225) and PT was ~13%. After changing MAF with a refurb Audi part everything was fixed. The degradation was so gradual that I did not notice it but with the new part the difference was very noticeable. 193 g/s, 3% PT, better gas milage and no more black soot on the tail pipes.

VW 2.0l MAFs. All VW 1.8T's use the SAME MAF as the TTT 180hp engines - in fact the early ones for the VW AWD engine are the exact same part number as the TT 180hp engines from 00-02 I believe - the ATC engine code. AWD = ATC - all parts are the same except the ECU.

I don't see why the sensor would be different (except for the thermister). It's the diameter of the housing that needs to be calibrated with the ECU and the factory does that. The flow through the MAF is a portion of the air flowing.

Perhaps it's a bit confusing when you look at it. Just about everyone thinks the centre lower grille is different whereas it's the upper grille (stock MY2001) that doesn't match the egg-box pattern of later 2003-> TT's.

...it would be useful to other MY2001 225 owners to know that even the shorter rounded-tip VW MAF works on them! From personal experience, pre-2001 models have a MAF sensor similar to VW's but without the capacitor. My 2001 225 had a totally different sensor. I also found out that the VW MAF sensor reads a lot more compared to my stock MAF. With the **** installed, the brand new stock will measure up to 156 g/sec whereas the VW will tip to 204 g/sec! The only downside with the VW MAF is that the engine will suffer from 'hickups' for a few minutes after it's been installed. After a short ride though they disappear and everythings works normally.
