I bought a 2001 TT Quattro a couple of months ago and noticed that the cover under the engine had been removed. Is this cover needed? Seems like it would be a pain to take off every time you change oil, etc.

Strictly speaking it isn't necessary, however it helps keep the motor clean and reduces road noise.

It's 10 minutes to remove and your local oil change place will no doubt forget to put all the screws back in.

It is a very good idea to have. If you are going to replace it consider purchasing a Panzer Plate instead of the stock plastic one. My oil pan has been saved more than once by it.
