Czech54-- any updates?

Re: Czech54-- any updates?
well, i had her towed to the Audi dealership last night. I talked with one of the service guys there who said, he hadn't looked at it, and hadn't done a diagnostic on it yet... he did however inform me that if it is the timing belt, which it could very well be, I would be needing to replace a cylinder head since it is an internal contact engine which was going to run me a little over 4 grand...
not the news i wanted to hear in the morning today.

oh, and I don't know if this would help with any diagnosis, but when i asked the service guy if he had hooked up the vagcom yet, he said, "well, there's no check engine light on"...
what the heck is that suppossed to mean???
he also informed me that he would try to get it in to look at "sometime within the next few days"
gee, thanks.

are you thinking that...
...since i was at idle, if the timing belt went, there wouldn't be damage to any of the cylinders???
they're still spinning at 1000 rpms... but i hope you are right if that's what you are infering...
or are you thinking it might be another problem?

if the timing belt snapped, even at idle, odds are valves are bent>>
and if this is the case, pay the dealer for the diagnosis and thank them for their time, then find another shop. You should be able to shop this around and find a much better deal than $4K.
If the belt is the culprit, likely you'll need some new valves, and very light if any machine work done to the head. Valves are cheap; it's the labor of installing them (remove cylinder head, etc) that will cost you. I can't imagine this job going over $2K if you fixed the existing parts VS putting on a new head.
But wait and see what the stealer says. Like I said, if it's major, get the car away from them ASAP if the work isn't covered by warranty.
