That "thing" is real ram-air to the inbox. I've driven the car, and
... it is also a music maker. You can hear that whistle blow like nothing I've ridden before.
3.2L DSG, and it goes from zero to gone in under 4s, WAY faster than I would've believed.
Bob put the intake there to get the air w/o disturbance off the hood, and to keep the line-of-sight relatively unobstructed. Other hood ornaments have more intrusion into driver sightlines.
Drove the car far enough and fast enough to appreciate the simply effortless amount of power it makes. Smooth, as good as OEM, only scary-fast. Docile, idles and drives as if it were a normal day at the TT-office. Hit the go-fast pedal and it is like riding in the Millenium Falcon at the transition to FTL: the view gets VERY blurry for a few seconds, and the sounds just howl!
AS we say in the South, "if it works, it ain't stoopid".

like the major said, it's a ram air scoop, up off the hoodline and over
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/110629/scooplightning.jpg"></center><p>the modshack. It gets a direct cool airstream to the engine, and yes you can hear the turbo howl. Got a real SEG outa the inTTruder when he test drove it and I had to beg him to try it!
