Default Engine light comes on after touching 6k RPM -- what could it be?

I was getting onto a highway and needed to kick in the power, so I revved up to about 6k RPM in 2nd and 3rd gear, then eased into 4th. I certainly didn't red line. But then I noticed my check engine light came on.

I pulled over, shut down, restarted--light still on. I checked all of the essentials and everything seemed A-OK. So I continued my drive with a very light foot.

The next day, I started up--light gone. But when I did the same thing again, revving up to about 6k RPM, the light came back on. I've got a stock engine, no performance mods. I'm only at 31k miles and just had my 30,000 mile service. I'm definitely going to get the diagnostic tools to be able to check/reset codes at any time without having to depend on the dealer.

Is this behavior of the check engine light hinting that something is wearing out, or is it just a simple "warning" on the "aggressive" driving?

Could be a number of things....swing by AutoZone and have them read the code for you.

Thanks Hans - under warranty, so dealer should replace; is there an improved mass air flow sensor?

Very cool, thanks -- a few folks not far from me -- I'll have to look 'em up!

Default There aren't any aftermarket MAF's just cheaper source.

Go to AutoZone and have the code read. If it is the MAF then go to the dealer to have it replaced under warranty.

What do they typically charge for that?

They'll do it for free... if you have a CEL light on.

What's the best/cheapest source that you know of for a MAF?
