Default engine needs replacement

after MAF failure:.

..first my dealer said the problem were pistons,,,now it was discovered that 2nd cylinder is dead.. I need to replace the whole lower part of the engine that goes to 5500USD (4000USD parts 1500USD labor). As the cost is not small are their any better alternatives? another engine or something like that.
I have 2001 TTC 225

Thanx in advance

Huh? A bad MAF killed your engine? That seems unlikely.

do you mean timing belt failure? bad MAF can't do that

Default how would that be?...

wouldn't the adaptations be so far out of spec that it would default to safe maps? and the knock sensor should pick up the detonation and pull the timing back to nothing.

upt ill the engine failure VAG-COM indicated that everything was OK and even oil started to fontain out of the engine onboard DIS indicated that everything was OK! and one bad thing it happened on highway!!! Everything was cheked and the only reason for detonations was supposed to be: when MAF failed a couple of days before that fact (it was replaced the same day) angine aspired too much oxygene. the result 2nd cylinder in bad shape and all 4 pistons half or completely 'dead'

Default Well....here's a story...

You can drive anything into the ground if you try hard enough. One of my customers in Europe toasted a motor for this reason (Big MAF housing, not mine BTW, and too low a MAF signal), It was doing high speed autobahn running though. By the time he figured out he was running lean, the motor was gone. The perils of improper tuning..

Yup. Detonation can destroy aftermarket rods and pistons.
