Esp light intermitant

Esp light intermitant
Hi guys, my sister's tt 1.8 has a intermittent fault with the esp light coming on. When it does sometimes the wheels try to lock up and obviously becomes very dangerous! I've checked for fault codes with a standard obd2 reader but nothing showing or stored. Checked wiring to wheels etc also. The only thing I found was o/s/f spring badly broken, would this maybe not help the situation? Any advice would be great.

The spring being broken could have easily caused the problem. whatever caused the spring to break (say a pot hole hit hard enough), likely damaged more than just the spring. On the drivers side wheel bearing housing sits your speed sensor. this sensor controls the esp, abs, and all wheel drive system (if the car has one). The speed sensor could be what is at fault here, however if it was, you normally would have a esp light that stays on constantly.
More likely, is that the toothed wheel on the wheel bearing housing was bent or cracked in some way from said impact. This wheel sits in between the brake rotor and the dust guard on the wheel bearing housing. If this was damaged, either a intermittent or permanent fault warning light would come on.
The problem you run into is that if the toothed wheel is damaged, you will have to replace the entire wheel bearing housing as it is all built into itself.
Also, in order to see most of these types of fault codes you will need the vag-com diagnostic software for a laptop computer and the obd2 adapter to get the computer to connect to the car.
