Default F*** the Stealerships

So i broke my glovebox handle the other day (i don't know why, it looks like Audi spent a lot of time and money installing those sterdy plastic pieces), and I took it to HBL over here in Tysons Corner, VA and here is the quote....

$1,300 ($900 for the part and $400 for install!!)

F- them and the horses they rode in on!!

looks like i'm gonna have to ghetto rig this one

Default now, when I bought my car, the saleman who did the orientation >

handoff pointed out two things specifically to me:
1. don't over-**** with the glovebox handle - it'll break off, and it's really expensive!
and
2. equally, watch out for the radio cover - that'll break too if you don't know how to operate it, so be careful...

Default on the midatlantic forum, the acronym "HBL" sets off some

interesting flames.
The entire glove box has to be replaced (~$700), but I cant imagine that it would be too complicated for a DIY.

uh-oh. Is there any insight as to the causes/possible prevention?

Default Design flaw. Prevention: Try not to open the glove box from the drivers side of the car. Also

when you do open the door, apply inward pressure while pulling the latch. Do not stuff the glove box full and never put heavy objects into it.\

Apply a light film of petroleum jelly to the posts. DO NOT OVER LUBRICATE! The door will keep popping open. If that happens, remove some of the lubricant.

I can explain it again (why it happens) if you want me to.
