FCC approves over-air digital radio... bubye satellite digital radio?
Sure this will take years to roll out and sure it means a new receiver expense for car & home, but I was never comfortable with paying *another* subscription to a satellite digital radio service like Sirius or XM.
Then again, this is my opinion, I could be wrong, your mileage may very, please consult a doctor before purchasing, may cause severe abdominal pains, etc...

FCC approves iBiquity digital radio technology

Where's the incentive to the radio station to buy new transmitters?
Radio station owners are among the cheapest bastards of all, and unless there is another revenue stream to be tapped, I don't see them falling all over themselves to convert or add digital transmitters. Especially since this is not a mandatory thing.
Ironically, the article mentions that the technology doesn't increase the range of the broadcast, unlike satellite radio, which would allow a station to reach a larger audience by being able to go nationwide.
Of course, I could be wrong. :-)

Well, like with PBS and other network TV going to digital broadcast, Sparkey-****,
traditional radio will lose listners to the quality and variety newly available to them via satellite radio (the equivalent of digital cable networks) so the incentive will to boost listnership by offering a comparable or better product... :-p

Yes but digital radios could receive info that turns into pictures and text on the screen.
I'm glad that I didn't buy satelite now. Being free, should blow satelite away.

True dat! But then again the FCC could mandate it like they are doing with HDTV.
Why do you think they are calling it "HD Radio"?
Also note the "big boys" behind the push: Clear Channel Communications, Infinity Broadcasting, ABC Radio, etc. Methinks this consortium is trying to take away market share from Sirius and XM before it takes larger hold.

While Sirius offers commercial free broadcasting I'll remain a subscriber..
Its quite refreshing just listening to music with no ad's or talk radio or news with such irritating intteruptions...
Plus having dedicated channels for comedy and the like appeal to me...
