Hypothetically If you were to put 3M painters tape on your
car for a long drive to keep from rocks dinging it. Do you think you would have a problem with the heat messing with the adhesive? Like hard as hell to get off the hood due to the heat? I am thinking it wouldnt hurt the paint HENCE the name painters tape. Any recos or suggestions are welcome. The drive will only be about 5 hours if that helps

They sell a tape especially for that. Racers tape.
You can get it from OG racing.

why bother since paper and even the tape don't have much impact resistance.
At least the 8mil film has a few mm of resiliant film to dissipate some of the impact of a flying stone. Tape might be OK for some sand but invinca-shield panels sold individually or a 12" roll of 3M film could be custom cut and applied easily. Paper on the other hand is a wood fiber and will scratch paint and might start to flap or vibrate marring your finish.

Don't laugh, try petroleum jelly!
I know a man who shows a roadster hot rod. When he travels to a event he covers the front with a thin layer of the stuff. I keeps rocks from hitting and the bugs don't stick. On arrival he washes it off and he's ready to go. He said it's an old trick.
