Default I think this is good news for California motorists...

The Union 76 near my work now has a huge sign up which states that their gas no longer has the additive MTBE, which I understands robs performance.

I wonder if this is Union 76 only, or all stations? Doesn't a lot of the fuel come from the same source? In any event, sounds like our TTs won't miss the MTBE!

Anyone else feel like they got a little buzz from MTBE fumes when fueling?

Default I've seen the signs, too. Guess it's like the "No MSG" signs at the Chinese restaurants. :)

Now if they'd only get the octane level back up to 93 or 94 I'd buy it. At $1.859 per gallon, it starts to add up pretty fast.

Default Good news in one way, bad in another...

MTBE pollutes groundwater, so the state of CA is banning it. 76 was one of the first refineries to stop using it in their CA gas. This is why CA gas is 91 octane now instead of 92, because MTBE helped up the octane. Refineries moved from 92 to 91 octane well in advance of the MTBE ban to avoid gas shortages once the ban comes into effect. MTBE also reduces emissions, so the state wants to replace it with Ethanol. This may give us back 92 octane gas, but with little, if any performance gain over the 91 we have now.

This is highly paraphrased and from memory, but you get the idea.

Default More of a curse than anything... they are probably using ethanol or methanol instead....

very little BTU (heat energy) content... makes for poor performance.... F'n hippies in CA govnt **** me off most of the time... I want the 94 octane they get on the east coast... screw this oxigenated gas crap - it is only of any use to the older cars, which fewer and fewer are on the road.... makes no difference in the new cars other than poor performance and poor fuel economy....
