Default immobilizer woes - flashing key no start / starts then stalls

I have an immobilizer issue. My key icon wont stop flashing sometimes so i have to keep reinserting the key to get it to immobilize. Is this a known issue and can it be fixed diy style?

If all your keys are affected it could be a module issue, a quick search
turned up this...

You may need a vagcom

That thread did more to confuse me than anything else. I'm pretty sure its an immobilizer issue - the light flashes. If I pull the key and reinsert, it will often work. I just want to fix it no before it gets any worse. What is the procedure to fix it with vagcom?

All I'm saying is module issues are sometimes intermittent, you haven't said if all your keys work or not, each key has a transponder, There are procedures to recode keys with vagcom if the key transponders ok. Vagcom will also tell you if the immobilizer control module has thrown a code.

The first place to go for troubleshooting is vagcom, there are only 5 things it can be,
key, ign cyl, immobilizer control module, ECM or the instrument cluster.

my cluster is already gettig whacky - gas gauge is messed up, dead pixels on the LCD, etc. I just haven't gotten around to sending it out for repair. I guess that's where I'll start and go from there.

You can get new master key from the dealer (no remote) by VIN.I think I paid $70 or so in 2009. My dealer charged me $35 to sync the new and old keys.

I would fix the cluster, always a potential candidate for all sorts of problems.
