Default Installing hardwoods. Phase 1 - prep work.

Pulled the carpet off the steps and pulled the banisters down as well.

I was hoping the risers would be in good enough shape to just paint, but unfortunately not. Looks like 1/4 plywood will be cut and installed so that a clean surface is available to paint.

The hardwood is there just to get an idea of the final look. We chose a Brazilian Walnut 3/4in thick and 3 1/4in wide.

Default are you removing the existing risers or just going on top? >

you'll possibly end up with unequal riser height at the top landing, unless that's getting done too. Also, there is an expectation with respect to the nosing height and overhang I urge you to pay attention to, if you haven't already considered it.

Default Will be chopping the existing stair nose and installing on top of the riser..

Landing is getting done also.

The only step that is affected is the first step from the basement. This will be fixed by installing subfloor over concrete when replacing existing carpet.

I have a pro coming in 2 weeks to help get this done in a weekend.
