Default Instrument Cluster and various lights not working.

I am sorry if this is a redundant post but please help. The speedometer, tachometer, fuel gage, and temp gauge are not working on my 2000 TTQ 180hp with 29,000 miles. Also when you turn the headlights on the cluster does not light up and the radio backlighting, backlighting for the heated seats, and rear defogger does not come on. The idiot lights do work on the cluster as well as the chime. The radio and heated seats work, the round dots will come on for the heated seats and the channel shows for the radio but no backlighting. Oddly enough (and I don't know if this is related) I cannot turn the fog lights off either when the headlights are on. They still go off automatically when the high beams are turned on. I have checked the fuses and they are OK and I have removed the cluster and the connections seem to be OK. I have had the cluster replaced 4-5 times, mostly under warranty but I did pay for it myself once. Oh also the mileage doesn't show and the outside temp is stuck at - 0.0 C. I would assume it was just the cluster if I didn't have the other problems. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you in advance! -Joe

Default Have your battery tested at AutoZone.

Also, do you have any added audio/video equipment, or any other things cutting into the electrical system.

The car is completly stock but the battery has to be charged everytime I start it, I did not drive the car at all last year (except around the block to keep everything working..ha!) and now that it is almost summertime in Illinois I want to start driving it again, could it be as simple as getting a new battery?

If you are charging the battery every week, then there is some sort of major electrical drain going on. Also, if you have replaced the cluster this many times, that should be a tip to some other major electrical drain or short.

Continental Audi in Naperville is pretty strong technically. If you are in the Chicagoland area, I would take it there.

Default I had a brand new, 1 mos. old, Red Top Optima bite the dust. Car would be driveable, and would show

correct voltage, just could not handle any load.

Your alternator may not be fully charging battery.

So, how did you make out? I am having the same problem (speedo, gas gauge out, temperature shows 0celcius. The difference is that I changed the battery 2 months ago at Sears. Worked fine after that. I do also have difficulties starting the engine. But it does start. Backlighting on instrument cluster works fine. The brake light on the dash is contantly on also. Thanks for letting me know how you fixed the issue. Thanks.

I spent 3 solid afternoons figuring a similar situation out out and tracing wiring diagrams for my 2001 Audi TT. If it's not your J123 relay (393), it's your headlight on/off switch. J123 routes power to all lights after the headlight on/off switch is activated. My symptoms were: 1) no right tail light/parking light "dim" brake light despite left working fine, 2) no illumination of the instrument cluster or backlights of buttons, and 3) bulb warning showing up on dashboard. All other lights worked fine, and I had full brake lights turn signals and reverse lights on both left and right. Just no instrument cluster lighting and no rear right tail light despite brake light working. Replace the headlight on/off switch first as the internal circuits are probably going bad. If that doesn't fix it, J123 is could be another culprit if all wiring checks out.
