Intake Question
I was looking at post on Feb 18 2005 from TTRoadRacer and he put a cone in the stock airbox and left the cover off. I am thinking about doing this my question is: do I need a breather filter. His I don't think has one of course he has a 3.2 not a 1.8T. I'm thinking about a K&N or a Spectra High Flow. The Spectra is $20 and the K&N is around $44.

Re: Intake Question
Yeah all you do is take the airbox out, unscrew the MAF and then put the filter on the end of that. I did it but I didn't notice much so I just put the panel filter back in.

Re: What was the noise difference?
Oh, haha, you can actually hear the turbo, and the "Woosh" is HUGE... there isn't much of an intake sucking sound and it doesn't make the car sound mean, but the turbo-involved suck and blow sounds are much louder. haha

Sounds ridiculous, but if you need to do it - you need a breather..

I personally have spent close to 4 hundred $$ on air filters (BMC CDA & Apexi cone filter). I found out that the BMC CDA was restrictive and running a bare filter was stupid (hot air into the intake not only reduces Oxygen levels to reduce HP but elevates overall engine, oil temps).
IMHO, I eventually bought SCHWINGS VTDA and am very happy with the results. I strongly suggest not to take the top of the OEM filter box and run a cone filter - you will be sucking the direct hot air that is radiating from the engine and radiator, wheras the VTDA's opening is right next to the fresh air coming in from the fender opening.
If you need to do what you are thinking of, do a search. About two years ago a found a supplier that sells TUCAN breather filters for about $8. Be sure to buy the filter that is made for VWs with a 25mm neck. Here is a picture of the breather filter
