Agree about the does nothing part. Someone did an airflow test on an A4 1.8t with and without...
and found no more or less air volume registering on the air flow sensor. Therefore, no difference.
I believe that a K&N drop in filter can not be worse at filtering than a paper filter and it sure lasts longer between cleanings / changings.
I personally consider mine a mistake since I will have my car no more than 45,000 miles since it is a lease and the K&N needs to be cleaned at 50,000 miles. Also taking into consideration that Audi will replace air filters as scheduled maintenance for free. My dealer says first air filter change at 30,000 miles. I have not checked my manual to verify.
This is not to say that K&N's are a waste of money period. I have a friend that put a K&N cone filter replacement on his 99 Mustang GT and it definitely helped with response upon throttle.
More than you asked for, I know, but I hope it helps.
Ivan

I have a cone K&N replacement and...
I have finally decided I don't like it. It's the Neuspeed, PFlow I think they call it, which replaces the factory air box with just a heat shield and K&N cone filter. I did notice a little more response when I step on the pedal from dead stop, but nothing to boast about, and it could possibly be all in my head (I did blow about $250, so maybe I have convinced myself there is a difference) There is a REAL DOWNSIDE, depending on your own opinion, in that the old stock air box insulated the whoosh noise that you hear when the dump valve recirculates - had I known about this noise, I wouldn't haver purchased the unit as it is very audible (passengers on several occasions have asked if there was something wrong with the car after hearing the valve dump) I called Neuspeed to b!tch about it and then considered the noise an 'enhancement'! I would defintely not recommend the 'shyesters', they wouldn't accept a return either. So much for standing behind one's work. Waist your money on coilovers, borla, or a chip; I have been extremly happy with the latter two.
2000 180CQ D.Blue/Ebony - MII mod
