Jacking up the TT
Worked on the TT this weekend and had the car up on jack stands again. I have had to make load spreaders out off 2X4s for both jacking the car and for the top of the jack stands. The problem is that if you use a floor jack the lift point is in the exact same place that you need to place the jack stand. You can't jack farther from the wheels or you will damage the main flange seem (this is hard to visualize unless you been under your car). However I got around this by cutting a lengthwise groove in the 2x4, with a couple of steel L channels reinforcing the underside, the flange fits into the groove in the 2X4 and the board spreads the lifting force. This board is positioned in between the two jack points leaving them exposed so a jack stand (with a similar 6inch peace of 2x4 on top) can be positioned. I jack one side up, place both jack stands, then do the other side. If I'm jacking to the full height of the jack stands I do it in two steps. I know this is going to be difficult for some of you to visualize so I'll post Pic's as soon as I get a digital camera (soon I hope). Has anyone else figured out a better way to do this? If so I'd like to hear about how you get your car on jack stands. JIM
