Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII impressions
My buddy just got a Lancer Evo VIII, and we went out and flogged it this weekend. Let me just say that I've been waiting for this car to arrive Stateside for nearly seven years, and I'm really happy that Mitsu and Subaru have both come to play.
Impressions? Well-balanced, with great grip and handling. The car is truly neutral in corners, and will correct under/oversteer smoothly. Strong powerband after 3000 rpms, and nice feel to the controls. Brakes are huge but didn't feel particularly sticky (probably still need bedding). Recaro seats are great and supportive. Car is (predictably) unrefined and jerky, and hard to drive smoothly. Interior is deliberately spartan. My major complaint comes with the clutch. The unit feels like it's slipping far too much, and it makes rapid launches impossible. Revving the engine and dumping just roasts it; feathering it in just bogs the engine and you lose boost. The car needs an anti-lag system or a stronger clutch for better launches. The 225 TT's launch and low-end torque are actually much more usable.
Overall, the car rocks, but is not refined enough for my tastes (especially coming from the TT). Obviously, the rough edges are bred into the spirit of the car, and most buyers are looking for a rally car feel, but I still like the drivability and intangibles of the TT better.

C'mon, evar, they'd NEVER take me: I actually LIKE the TT and can give a balanced opinion.
Besides, you'd just hit me up every day for more pics of the elusive brown TT. It would compromise my journalistic integrity. :P

Don't think this driver thinks it's "well balanced" (not my quotes inside)
"here's the supposed story from another thread...
"The rumor is that a youth was asking to "test drive" the floor model (just turn on the motor, hear the exhaust, feel the trans. go into gear, etc.)...
Apparently that wasn't enough and the youth in question (who is being held by the Bristol TN P.D.) somehow (either intentionally or accidentally) dumped the clutch at/or near redline..."
