You can content yourself with the fact that "professional" astronomers
rarely actually get to look through an eyepiece anymore. Not quite the same looking at a CCD image
on a monitor in a well-lit and heated control room, if you ask me... :>

Reasonable question, but ...
I'll be in charge of the team of engineers who keep the
intruments working - they certainly need to be on site. As do most of the upper-level science and operations guys. Doesn't hurt to be there to get snippets of available
telescope time occasionally, too.
