Default My new TT (very very very long)

I finally got it (still pinching myself). I ordered my 2001 Aviator Grey 225QC on March 11th, ready for a build in week 17 and I finally picked up on Sat, March 27th from Anchor Audi.

I must say, the whole process was as smooth as could be. I was always treated well from the minute I walked into the dealers door (when I met Barry) to the last wave as I drove away in my first new car, the Audi TT.

My friend and I were picked up at the train station in Lynbrook, LI by Barry on Saturday morning. There
has never been a longer period of time than those next four minutes of driving to the dealership. I ordered this car site unseen, I never test drove one and had seen maybe two in real life. I was able to sit in the sold one at the dealership for about two minutes but that was as close as I got to actually driving it. Needless to say I was more than a little worried about getting mine. Would I like it? Would it fit me as a person or even give me the thrill that it seems to give others? As we pulled up to the dealership my eyes were jumping around, looking for the car. Barry had told me it was inside so I was scanning the buildings trying to get my first glimpse. We parked and as we were headed towards the door Barry pointed it out in the prep room. Oh my….

My heart was racing as we got closer and the reality of this moment a year in the making (when I first saw the TT and decided one was to be mine) was finally here. We stepped into the room and it just blew me away. The Aviator Grey color is a strange one and I have lost more than a few hours of sleep over the choice. It is beautiful. One of the hardest things about the color is to describe it. Blushish-gray? Gun metal? Duck tape? Primer? The color changes in different lights and shades as you walk around it. It looks very light at times, almost white and at other times a darker, meaner gray. Barry said more than a few times that the color had been commented on as it sat those lonely 2 days waiting for me.

The first thing I was struck with is the size of the car. It is a small sports car. Of all the pictures I saw it always look so impressive and much bigger. I was able to walk around it and just marvel at the much talked about unique looks but I must say it is kinda cute. The TT looks like it is moving as it stands still. It has one of those racing type body designs that just screams at you to get in it and make it go fast. I, of course, has to actually make it mine first.

Barry than led me through the purchasing process. Signing papers and going over every last detail, nothing was left out. All in all the signing and introduction period took about an hour and a half. It was really hard to focus as my head swam in the large moment and I just hoped that Beth (the friend with me) was taking notes. It was during the introduction to the car that I first encountered the most prominent feature of the car, the “awe factor.” People just generally smile and stare at the car but more on that later, lets talk about how it drives.

In driving the car for the last 700 miles (2 days!) the most surprising thing has been how easy it drives. It shifts, breaks and handles with a real level of refinement. I expected much more of a raw feel in the car, but am pleasantly surprised to experience the overall driver friendliness. The seats are wonderful and the driver view is really well done. I was worried that I would not be able to get a full perspective of my environment but once I adjusted the steering wheel, seat and mirrors I felt that I could see every part of the car and the road around me. This proved true as drove through the city and up on I95.

Yes it is fast. Although I was still in my very long 500, 600 or 1,000 mile break-in period (depending on who you ask) I did get to gun it now and again. Turbo lag? Barely. This car gets up and goes from almost any speed. First gear is short but damn it will throw you back and second just pulls and pulls and pulls… and pulls. On the highway you can leave it and 4th gear which makes every tap of the accelerator an instant jump forward. The unique thing about the speed is how it is delivered. I have driven a handful of sports cars and this is the first that is so even keeled when it comes to acceleration. No dumping the rear, no tire squeal, just go. Amazing. Taking a corner has never been more fun. Gas it and go this car will hold on. As my father said while I was out giving him a test drive and taking an on-ramp pretty hard but not as hard as I could “why did you let off the gas?”

On the highway it is a dream. Put it in sixth and just relax (was told not to use the cruise control). The hardest part about the car is trying not to look at the people around you who are staring, waving and giving the thumbs up. This car is not for the shy. I was noticed and talked to everywhere I went. At gas stations people would come out of the building and just stand around it. On the road it was honks, waves and lots of head turning. I fielded every question from “what car is that?” to “Is it really as cool as it looks?” and the obvious “How much is it?” The car sparks the interest from every age as well. I had 8 year old kids walking by saying “nice Audi” as well as men with families in their Volvos asking to take a peak inside.

There has been so much talk about the Bose stereo it is hard to be subjective. I was prepared for it to suck and I am glad I was because is certainly does not. Is it the most refined stereo on the market? No. Could you build a better one for less money? Yes. It does however provided a good mix of clarity and thump (just try the new Eminem) and some features that you will not be able to duplicate in something you buy.

In general I found the car to be really well thought out. Things were where I thought they should be and did the thing they should. The few things that I would put on the “not-so-awesome” list are the most obvious. Storage is not abundant in this car. I managed to get all my gadgets and things placed, but it took some time. The glove box is more of a finger box. The CD changer can only really be accessed when you are stopped and outside of the drivers door. The back seats are just for looks and the occasional bag.

One of the best things about the car was how much I knew about it before I even drove it. Since I have
spent WAY to much time on this forum it was nice to compare and contrast to other’s experiences. Like the first time I heard the 2,900 RPM honk. I am sure I would have freaked out if I had not only knew what it was but have the part number to send to my dealer.

Again, thanks to all who have posted encouragement as the time passed or just put up with some of my
insane rants. I am proud to be a TT owner and be a part of such a special group of people.

Pictures to follow.
