Default My response to 1.8Thai(alphaquattro) regarding the birth of Modern art... (long)

(I had mentioned that a Rembrandt posted by Kim was suggestive, in the detail brush strokes, of the DNA that started Modern Art. He had wondered the basis for my supposition)

... Upon careful examination of the brush strokes used in the paintings, going back at least as far as the Renaissance, you can see the genesis of the movement known now as Abstract Expressionism. Also the preliminary paintings (known then as cartoons) betray the artists hand in a way that is not evidenced in the court work that now hangs in museums. Additionally the underpaintings that are seen either through x-rays or in restoration work has a striking similarity to impressionistic work that has been labeled the "birth" of modern art. The real impetus for modern work was the development of photography that allowed court painters to apply their talents in a direction that was more personal and less in the service of an illiterate populous. Paintings from the pre-printing press era were THE mass media of the day. And as such the content was directed by those who controlled power.

How was that :-)

Default While I think all art is somewhat derivative of what came before, I'm not sure

I totally agree with you here....in my mind, the Fauves were the real start of what we now refer to as "modern art."
