Default Is there a finite amount of grass? :) Or do you do this because you are in a dry climate?

The latter question is the serious one.

Default My reasoning

Some pros for grass: nice to play, walk on, looks nice when perfectly maintained, gives neighbors a competition of sorts to see who has the nicest landscaped and well manicured lawns.

Some cons for grass: extremely high water use, need for pesticides to control weeds and bugs enters water table, runs off into sewers into rivers, streams, etc., mowing, mowing, mowing, time spent on lawn maintenance that could be devoted to "Z-ing" the TT, etc.

Xeriscaping does work in dry climates but also in wetter climates. The key is less maintenance, the use of perennials that like to reseed themselves so startup costs are not too expensive, the use of drip irrigation that keeps water flowing from the tap (you can read about water wars with states fighting for more water all the time), etc.

Still, in the final analysis, it is an individual thing. After having 4,000 sq. ft. of lawn that needed constant attention, I am pleased to have xeriscaping where weed pulling out the occasional weed from my rockscape is preferred. Just my take on it.

I'd enjoy a picture of your yard. Sounds neat.
