2003 TT COUPE AND ROADSTER OFFER CONVENIENT FUN WITH NEW SIX-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The 2003 Audi TT Coupe and Roadster were unquestionably designed for owners who desire pure driving joy in a luxurious, carefree sports car. Inspired by the renowned Tourist Trophy -- a motorsports event that began on the Isle of Man in 1905 -- this year's TT Coupe and Roadster add a new six-speed automatic transmission that extends the excitement of the open road to all driving enthusiasts. With this addition, the Audi TT is sure to maintain the buzz it began since its debut in 1999.

The Audi TT represents a collaboration of both art and engineering. With its sports car heritage and exhilarating performance, TT designers smartly -- and rightly -- created a sports car with exacting intentions. Every curve of the TT is precise. Every interior item is detailed for form and function. From the aluminum-trimmed air vents to the unique fuel door, the Audi TT is performance art at its finest.

True to their original design, the Coupe and Roadster maintain their head-turning silhouettes.

The 2003 models feature an aggressive new grille with vertical and horizontal cross sections and the trademark Audi four rings, as well as new polished-chrome "TT" badging in a sleek design to match the body. Other 2003 highlights include distinct exterior accents, new color combinations for the TT Roadster and purposeful interior refinements.

In addition, the 2003 TT lineup is streamlined to suit a variety of customer choices, from cruising around town to full-throttle driving. The 180-horsepower Coupe and Roadster models feature the FrontTrak® front-wheel drive system and a six-speed automatic transmission, marking the first application of an automatic transmission in the TT. The six gears result in improved performance with the gear ratios closely matched to the engine's performance characteristics. The automatic transmission is a welcome alternative for drivers who prefer convenient, carefree shifting.

The sporty 180-hp model has a peak torque of 173 lbs. ft. at 1,950-4,700 revolutions per minute, and features Tiptronic® steering wheel-mounted gear shifting controls. The front-wheel drive Coupe with six-speed automatic transmission has a 0-60 miles-per-hour time of 7.9 seconds, while the 180-hp Roadster accelerates from 0-60 mph in 8.1 seconds.

For thrill-seeking drivers, the 225-hp model features Audi's legendary quattro® permanent all-wheel drive system -- which ensures directional stability and performance by shifting up to 100 percent of torque between the two axles -- and a six-speed manual transmission. The 225-hp engine has a peak torque of 207 lbs. ft. at 2,200-5,500 rpm.

The 225-hp TT Coupe with six-speed manual transmission and quattro all-wheel drive sprints from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds. The TT Roadster also produces heart-pounding speed, surging from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds. Regardless of engine choice, both Coupe and Roadster deliver the high-end performance associated with and expected of an Audi.

To enhance traction, Audi engineers have included a host of computer-controlled features as standard equipment, including an Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP®), an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and electronic rear brake pressure regulation. ABS helps control the vehicle during stopping, while ESP sensors measure such variables as wheel speed, yaw (the angular velocity of the car about the vertical axis), steering wheel angle and lateral acceleration to help prevent a skid or other loss of control. If any trouble is detected, ESP helps stabilize the car by modulating the throttle or applying braking power to individual wheels, as necessary.

Contributing to the TT's performance for 2003 are optional, 17-inch all-season tires for both the 180- and 225-hp engine models. For TT Coupes and Roadsters with the 225-hp engine, exclusive 18-inch all-season tires are also available. All cast-alloy wheels, regardless of size, are updated for 2003.

Seven-spoke, 16-inch cast-alloy wheels are standard on 180-hp models, while 225-hp models feature standard six-spoke, 17-inch cast-alloy wheels with concave spokes. Optional on the 225-hp models are seven-spoke, 18-inch cast-alloy and five-spoke, 17-inch forged-alloy wheels.

Both the 2003 TT Coupe and TT Roadster have a standard New Generation Audi concert stereo with in-dash CD player and an optional enhanced Bose® sound system with AudioPilotTM noise compensation technology. All 2003 Audi TT and A4 models feature AudioPilot, a noise-dampening system that continually filters interior and exterior noise and adjusts for better music quality in real time.

The Coupe and Roadster also feature the available HomeLinkâ universal remote transmitter, and this year will offer four new exterior colors: Brilliant Red, Ocean Blue, Goodwood Green and Dolomite Gray.

Inside, all versions of the 2003 Audi TT Coupe have fine nappa leather seats with door panel inserts standard. The Coupe also has two new interior colors: Ocean Blue and Vanilla, while the TT Roadster adds Vanilla and Black Baseball Optic to its interior color palette.

TT Performance and Safety: Design in Concert with Function

The TT's short front overhang design requires a transverse engine layout, necessitating the development of a first-of-its-kind hydraulically controlled electric torque distribution system. Torque comes from a combination of a hydraulic multi-plate clutch, an electric pre-load pump and an electric solenoid valve controlling pressure -- working together in a dynamic system that responds instantly and precisely when wheel slip at either front or rear axle occurs.

Body rigidity of the TT helps result in precise handling under nearly all circumstances. A strong, two-sided, fully galvanized body assembly features high-strength aluminum side intrusion bars in the doors. Bolstered doorsills, reinforced side panels and modifications to the body contribute to extremely low levels of vibration.

In the TT Coupe, a tubular reinforcement made from high-strength steel behind the door -- referred to as the "trumpet" because of its shape -- supports the side panel against the floor and minimizes intrusion by another vehicle in side-impact collisions.

For structural rigidity in the TT Roadster, two aluminum rollover bars are incorporated and connected to a reinforcement beam. Torsional rigidity is attained with sturdy transitions at the joints between the A- and B-pillars and the floor assembly. Rear cross-members and a sturdy windshield frame with high-strength steel A-pillar inserts that connect to the floor assembly add to the sturdy feel of the TT Roadster.

Thousands of hours of road tests and focus groups helped Audi designers develop an open-top TT that meets the true style of a roadster. A power glass windscreen, shaped to follow the outline of the rollover bars, significantly reduces turbulence, while the soft top with large, heated rear window self-stows behind the seats.

Both TT models have inherent safety provisions, including the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system, first-in-class seat-mounted head and chest side airbags and next generation dual front airbags for optimum occupant protection.

Passive safety in both models includes front crumple zones, pretensioners on the three-point front safety belts to take up slack before a crash, and front-seat load limiters that gradually release the belts to reduce pressure as forward momentum is slowed. The TT Coupe also has a three-point safety belt system for rear occupants, while the TT Roadster includes an interior emergency trunk release to prevent entrapment. A first aid kit and emergency warning triangle is standard on all Audi vehicles.

A power, folding top is standard on the 225-hp Roadster and optional on the 180-hp model. Lowering the top is a quick, two-step process: Simply push the button to release the single-point, secure-lock handle and give it a quarter-turn twist, then use the electric switch on the center console. A foldable tonneau is easily put in place and adds a neat, finished appearance.

In both TT Coupe and Roadster, the automatic climate control system with digital-display temperature setting features a sun sensor and dust/pollen filter.

To ensure that the driver and front passenger find optimum seating positions, both front seats are contoured and offer height adjustment. The driver also has the comfort and convenience of a tilt and telescoping steering wheel.

Audi TT customers can choose the optional Premium Package, which includes heated front seats with individual temperature controls, HomeLink universal remote and self-leveling Xenon high-intensity discharge headlights.

An 80-watt, six-speaker system with in-dash CD player is standard in the TT Coupe, while a 120-watt system with an additional speaker between the seats comes standard in the TT Roadster. For concert-quality sound, Bose Music Systems are optional and deliver 175 watts in the TT Coupe and 225 watts in the TT Roadster.

To keep the TT Coupe and Roadster secure, Audi includes as standard equipment an alarm system with theft-deterrent repeater lights on each door windowsill.
