After I read John S's post as far as I'm concerned MOBIL 1 -- 0W-40 is the only way to go.

Default Ack ! Jim, I Just bout a case (6 qts) Mobil 1 5W-30 for my first 5K change. Should I

Exchange it for the 0W-40 ?

My logic was winter's over (at least it should be) so I really don't need the "0W" and it's a long way until summer time so figured I didn't need the upper extreme of "40"..

If my logic or knowledge is flawed please tell me. You have a lot more TT experience then I.

Yes, or "why have oil on your rings during start up?"

Default Me too Chris -- I can't keep up with the oil discussions here. Just when I thought the consensus...

was for 5W-30 Mobil One, I ran out and bought it. Now I too am thinking I should go with the 0W-40. Know anyplace around that carries it??

Dick, what does the '40' mean to you as in 0w-40?

Default Not in the U.S.

0W-30, 5W-30, 10W-30, and 15W-50 seem to be your choices

Default Jim, I look to you as *the* authority on oil here....

First, thanks for all the outstanding info you've posted...you have really helped me grasp the concepts of engine lubrication. Second, allow me to pose this question: The way I understand it, the "0" is viscosity at cold (startup) temp, the "W" designates that the ASE standard for cold/winter weather has been met, and the "40" designates that the oil viscosity will be no thinner than SAE 40 at operating temps. Now, that said (and assuming I got that all right) my question is this: With the advent of multi-viscosity oils, do you think it is even necessary to switch multi-vis oils each season? Moveover, can a synthetic like Mobil 1 0W-40 be used year round, at all latitudes? Also, I thought that the industry strayed away from large viscosity spreads, i.e 10W-40 (or 0W-40) in favor for a smaller spread, i.e. 15W-30. Have any insight to share on that aspect?

Thanks again for your insight. I don't mean to burden you with questions, you just seem very knowledgable in this arena!
